Styles of Hearing Aids

Hearing aids come in many different styles, from custom in the ear devices to behind the ear models. Our Audiologists can help you select the style that's right for you.

Custom, In The Ear Models

Custom hearing aids are fitted to an individual's ear using an ear impression. Then a shell is built to fit perfectly in the patient's ear based on that impression.
Invisible In Canal (IIC)

The smallest style is the IIC, or invisible in the canal. This style is the most discreet, but sometimes lacks the power and some features that other models have.

Completely In Canal (CIC)

Completely in the canal (CIC) hearing aids are nearly invisible. This model is best for mild to moderate hearing losses.

In The Canal (ITC)

In the canal (ITC) instruments are slightly larger than the CIC. They also have better battery life, are often easier to handle and can fit more severe hearing losses.

Full Shell, or In The Ear (ITE)

Full Shell (ITE) models are the largest custom devices available. They use a larger battery, which means longer battery life. They also have the most powerful circuits of the custom options.

Extended Wear Models

Extended wear devices are invisible and worn 24/7. They can be more convenient, but have some limitations in features and strength.
Invisible Extended Wear

Receiver in the canal (RIC) models have a thin wire that sends signals to a receiver (speaker) placed inside the ear canal. These models can be paired with sized tips or custom earmolds. RIC hearing aids are popular because they are discreet and can fit a wide variety of hearing losses.

Behind The Ear Models

Behind The Ear models sit on top of the ear and typically have a type or wire that sends sound into the ear canal. These can be paired with custom earmolds or different sized tips.
Receiver In Ear (RIC)

Receiver in the canal (RIC) models have a thin wire that sends signals to a receiver (speaker) placed inside the ear canal. These models can be paired with sized tips or custom earmolds. RIC hearing aids are popular because they are discreet and can fit a wide variety of hearing losses.

BTE With Earmold

Behind the ear (BTE) hearing aids have a sound tube that is connected to a custom earmold. While larger than RIC hearing aids, these devices tend to have better battery life. They also fit more severe hearing losses.
